Innovative circular demonstrators developed in EU Horizon 2020 Project PRESERVE
As part of the EU Horizon 2020 project PRESERVE, groundbreaking circular solutions have been developed to enable the reuse of bio-based and biodegradable materials. Two inspiring demonstrators have been created to showcase how sustainable technology and creativity can drive the transition to a circular economy.
Demonstrator 1: Shopping bag made from recycled bio-based PLA
The first demonstrator is an eco-friendly shopping bag, entirely produced from recycled PLA (Poly Lactic Acid). This bio-based and biodegradable material is derived from recycled packaging and repurposed into a non-woven fabric. The fabric is created using high-quality multifilament yarns based on recycled input material. The result is a durable, strong, and fully circular shopping bag that reduces packaging waste and promotes reuse.
Demonstrator 2: Display box made from recycled bio-based PLA and denim fibres
The second demonstrator is an innovative display box designed for presenting and promoting products such as cosmetics (e.g., face creams, tubes) or food items (e.g., snacks, bars). This display box stands out due to its unique composition:
Material base: The packaging of the displayed products is made from PLA and can be recycled after use.
Composite material: Recycled PLA is combined with recycled denim fibres to create a composite material. This material forms a non-woven structure, which is thermoformed into the desired 3D shape.
Look and feel: The PLA acts as a thermoplastic binding agent, while the denim fibres provide a stylish appearance and unique tactile qualities.
The Importance of design in consumer decisions
A key feature of this display box is its emphasis on aesthetic design. Research shows that purchasing decisions are predominantly driven by emotional factors, and the visual appeal of a product is often as important—if not more important—than the sustainability story behind it.
