The confidential report provides the specifications for the five pre-selected food and drinks associated packaging applications identified at the beginning of the project. The properties and functionalities of the materials currently used on the market are used as a benchmark to make sure fossil-based materials can be replaced by the developed innovative bio-based materials, and the new solutions are fit to be integrated into existing systems.
PRESERVE aims to improve the circularity of bio-based packaging from origin and design to subsequent life cycles. The project intends to enhance the properties of existing bio-based materials for different packaging applications using innovative processing technologies. New end-of-life options, including innovative upcycling solutions, will be applied to make sure these new packaging applications are fit for a truly bio-based, circular economy.
This deliverable D2.2 describes the specifications for five pre-selected food-associated packaging applications: to-go pocket, snack flow pack, pouch, beverage brick, and moulded pulp packaging. Special attention is paid to using and improving readily available bio-based material components, such as polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoate acids.
The confidential report provides detailed information on the requirements and challenges for the materials and their end-of-life options, based on the knowledge of the manufacturers and brand owners that are part of the project consortium. The properties and functionalities of the materials currently used on the market for the selected food packaging applications are used as a benchmark to make sure fossil-based materials can easily be replaced by the developed innovative bio-based materials, and the new solutions are fit to be integrated into existing systems. The report also specifically focuses on the processability and ability to be sorted and recycled of each of the developed materials and applications, to make sure they are ready to be integrated into existing systems. Other specific market requirements, such as cost aspects, regulatory conformity, environmental aspects, and consumer demands are also assessed and defined.
